((Operations Office))

Traan had been suprised when he had reported for duty for his first shift. He had expected to meet and recieve a briefing and duty assignment from one of the senior operations officers onboard. He was after all, a Senior Technician, with over 2.5 decades of experience. But instead he found himself receiving his assignment on a padd, passed to him by a Lt JG who had introduced himself as the Asst Head of Maintenance Section 9 here on SBB. An asst. head of a section, not even the entire department.

Traan dismissed his disgruntled inclinations and figured it was just his first day, and we would have plenty of time to meet his senior staff. The base had 10s of thousands of personnel assigned and an Operations Department numbering somewhere in the neighborhood of 8000, so he reminded himself how large this place was and how few senior staff there actually were in each department. His padd him assigned to ‘standard maintenance patrol, decks 100-200’. Apparently there was enough work in those 100 decks to keep him and 3 other maintenance techs busy for their entire shift. He would also be responsible to attend to any new urgent maintenance matters that arise on those decks during his shift.

Traan: ‘maintenance patrol??? I’m a senior Tech for crying out loud. Less then 2 months ago I was attending meetings with senior construction Engineers at the fleet yards, in charge of a Installation and testing team made up of over 50 technicians….either there was a snafu with my transfer orders or I really pissed off someone in starfleets Personnel department. This is some bullsh….’ He thought to himself as he scanned the information on the padd, and reviewed the list of 37 different maintenance tasks that were assigned to his section.

3 of the tasks were already marked as ‘ attending- in progress’ presumably because 3 of the other techs on patrol with them had began dealing with them. He scrolled down and found a task that atleast somewhat related to his occupational specialty. He marked the task titled ‘Faulty isolinear circuits in power distribution relay panel 186-H-13’ as ‘in progress’ with his personal signifier, then he grabbed his assigned tool case and started to head for the door when the LtJG who had handed out the padds hailed him over from across the room.

LT JG Shmarmy McDoofusNPC: Chief Traan. Can I see you over here for a quick second? *beckoning him over to his desk without standing from his chair*

Traan: ‘maybe he just read some of my service record and changed his mind about my assigned duties, ha’ *he thought to himself as he strode over to the Lts desk* Sir. Yes sir.

McDoofus: Yes, thanks chief, welcome aboard by the way. I hope your not too disappointed with this weeks duty roster. I have read some of your file and I know that some of this work is a bit beneath what a Chief with your amount of experience would expect, but i just want you to know I specially selected you to join my section when we were reviewing the new transfer at last weeks department staff meeting. I promise I will try to get you assigned to a position that is more suitable for you once you get more settled in here.

*His words sounded genuine but the Lt was also harbouring the secret desire to utilize Traan and his years of experience to help him and his Division win this months ‘Top Maintenance Crew Award’. In reality, McDoofus was on thin ice with some of his superiors and needed a win, any win, to help pad his service file leading into the next round of ‘Crew Evals’ a few months from now. If McDoofus was passed over for 1 more promotion, he would be removed from the ‘promotable’ list and could be stuck as a Lt. Jg with little hope of promotion or any assignments above that of an assistant department head. And he had hand selected Traan out of the newly assigned crew members as the best choice to help make him look good to his superiors.*

Traan: Oh, yes, thank you Sir. I appreciate that. I’ve never been one to gripe and complain, but since you mentioned it, yes, i did think the assignment to routine maintenance patrol may not be the best use of my training and experience. But i appreciate you Noting it. Its been quite a while since I’ve been crawling through J tubes with hyper spanners and insulated plasma coil fitters working on isochips and relay circuits, but i’m sure it won’t be much of an issue until you find something else for me to do sir.

McDoofus: Very well then chief…check in with me near the end of your shift I’ll see what I can figure out for you. *nods*

Traan: Yes sir, I will do that sir. *He picked up his tools case against and headed out of the office and off to his first tasking*
